"Sons of Anarchy" Gets Season 3

About 4.33 million viewers hooked their eyes on "Sons of Anarchy" season 2 finale on Tuesday, December 1. It was FX Network's number-one program for the night, the top-rated show on television in the 10:00 PM time period and also the most-watched episode ever for "Sons", surpassing its season two premiere. For that, "Sons" is granted a third season order.

"The success of Sons of Anarchy is very gratifying and the show has become a bona-fide hit," said FX President and General Manager John Landgraf. "The critics have recognized Sons as one the best series on television, and the show has earned its place alongside FX's great drama series The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me and Damages. Creatively, this season was spectacular and all credit goes to Kurt [Sutter] and the incredible cast led by Katey Sagal, Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman."

A full 13-episode season is in the order and creator/executive producer Kurt Sutter reached a deal on a two-year extension to continue his services as showrunner/writer. Additionally, all the cast are in place to return with the premiere slated for September 2010.

In an interview with NJ.com, Sutter said that in the next season he wants "to take them into a world that is outside their own, where they don't have control, where they are subject to other people's laws and beliefs and perameters. Where they aren't quite the big fish in the small pond."

Re: "Sons of Anarchy" Gets Season 3

Koleny obszerny artykuł dotyczący Sons of Anarchy i jego trzeciego sezonu.

What Will Happen in 'Sons of Anarchy' Season 3?

The Internet's all abuzz over Tuesday's 90-minute season two finale of 'Sons of Anarchy,' which delivered 4.33 million viewers and launched the FX show to the number one spot in cable programs for the night. It was also the most-watched episode ever for 'Sons,' surpassing the season two premiere (4.29 million viewers).

If you haven't watched it yet, we won't spoil it for you. Suffice to say the show earned its kudos that night, especially in the last 20 minutes. Not surprisingly, Kurt Sutter has signed a two-year deal to continue as 'Sons' showrunner, and FX has ordered 13 episodes for the show's third season, scheduled to begin in September 2010. What?! We have to wait nearly a year?! Ok, well, as Tony Soprano would say, what are ya gonna do?

Or, as Kurt Sutter said in a press release, "This has been a wonderful ride and we're just getting started. I'm really proud of the work by our incredible cast and crew. The response this season from the fans and critics has been terrific, and I can't wait to get back to the writer's room and start on season three."

Sutter hasn't posted anything on his blog or Twitter account at this writing -- we're sure he's still riding the high from the finale -- but he did do an interview with Alan Sepinwall, so let's go ahead and speculate what season three might bring, based on the interview and the season two finale. SPOILERS ahead.

Gemma's on the lam. Not only is she on the lam, but she's on the lam with Unser, practically holding hands as they motor off to who knows where. Since Stahl has Gemma over a barrel on the death of both Half-Sack and Polly -- though we know Gemma killed only Polly, while Stahl was the shooter on Half-Sack -- she'll likely have to lay low for a while [Correction (many thanks to the commenters below): Stahl didn't kill Half-Sack, Cameron did. Stahl shot Edmund and blamed it on Gemma.] Perhaps she'll hole up with a yet-to-be-cast relative (how about Sigourney Weaver as a tough-talking, long-lost sister?). Or maybe Gemma and Unser will find a remote, Hole in the Wall-type cabin in which to hunker down for a while. We're sure that Stahl's sins will come back to haunt her at some point. Let's face it. She's a ticking time-bomb.

Half-Sack is dead. We're not speculating here. Sutter said this himself in the Sepinwall interview, noting that Johnny Lewis, who played the character, wasn't happy on the show. " Creatively, he really wanted out of his contract. We had ongoing conversations, and we decided we'd find some noble way for him to go. It wasn't my intent to try to be sensational and kill off a main character. People are going to have their reaction, but I don't want an actor that's not happy. It's not good for the actor, and it's not good for the show."

Jax is heartbroken. Standing helplessly on a dock while a vengeful enemy motors off with your baby is gut-wrenching, not only for Jax, but the viewers, too. We have to think this will play out in a number of ways. For one thing, the abduction will likely create some bad feelings between Jax and Tara. Yes, Cameron was armed, but we're sure we're not the only ones who were yelling at Tara to make her move when Cameron laid the gun down to pick up baby Abel. She had an opportunity to stop things and didn't take it. Likewise, you have to wonder why the Sons didn't try to hotwire a boat or something and go after Cameron in the water.

But none of that happened, so we'll likely see the Sons rumble out of their element and into Belfast, Northern Ireland at some point in season three. "Clearly, we're not a show that can up and move everybody to Belfast," says Sutter. "Does that mean having a second unit work out there to match some shots? But the plan is to take the charter to Ireland." While Titus Welliver ("Jimmy O") is not locked in for season three, Sutter is hopeful they'll be able to work around his schedule.

There's still unrest within SAMCRO. Since Gemma revealed the rape to Jax and Clay right before Jax planned to leave, we've been wondering how this will all play out. Sure, they're united at this point, but the bad feelings are still simmering under the surface, as they are with Opie, who will struggle with covering Tig's back knowing what he knows. "That's the kind of stuff that will not go away, and will always impact their relationship for the rest of the series," says Sutter.

Hale will take over. It seems inevitable that Unser will step down as Chief next season, as his connection with Gemma and their little adventure might leave him unable to do his job. That leaves Hale in a position to step up and take control. But how much control is the question. Charming has been able to cruise along, albeit uneasily, because of the relationship between Unser and the Sons. Hale doesn't have that, and he doesn't seem like the type of person to compromise in order to keep things on an even keel. Things could spiral into chaos fast.

Other issues haven't gone away. There are a few things hanging out there that will likely play out somewhere down the line, including the charges against the Sons for the raid on Zobelle's church; the storyline about the Native Americans and the illegal home-made bullet trafficking; the fate of Chuck and Darby after the Caracara fire; and Luann's murder (Georgie may not have been behind it).

Sound off: What do you think will happen in the third season of 'Sons of Anarchy'?
