11x1 One for the Road - Pratt, Chen and Elgin are being rescued after eluding gunfire and crashing into the Chicago River, but Elgin doesn't survive the ordeal. Abby starts her career as a doctor by dealing with a drug-smuggling patient. Sam seeks to escape her returning boyfriend and hits the road. Two new interns, including Ray Barnett, arrive at County. Nielsen Ratings: 19.7 million viewers

11x2 Damaged - Carter suffers with depression and crosses some lines when treating an injured Iraq War veteran, Abby deals with resentful nurses and tends to a young woman kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery. Elsewhere, Kovac makes an honest confession to a fleeing Sam, and Neela gets a visit from her domineering, old-school parents.

11x3 Try Carter - Carter convinces Corday to perform an illegal transplant operation between two HIV+ men, Abby and Ray argue on the course of treatment of an injured bicycle messenger, Neela looks for employment without much success, and Corday confronts Weaver on the hiring of Dr. Dubenko as County reels under the weight of a busy 4th of July caseload.

11x4 Fear - Two small children are rushed to the ER after falling from a third story window, allegedly escaping their mother's violent, abusive ex-husband. Corday is disciplined over her illegal surgery, and instead of taking a non-tenure track position, she decides to call it quits. Lewis, the new Chief of Emergency Medicine, offers Neela a job at the hospital when an intern leaves his position.

11x5 An Intern's Guide to the Galaxy - It’s Neela’s first day back at the ER and Pratt expects the interns to take a large patient load during their shifts. In competition, Ray makes a big mistake in re: donating a patient’s organs against the family’s wishes. Carter asks new social worker, Wendell Meade, to walk out with him in a coy pursuit.

11x6 Time of Death - Kovac, Abby, Pratt and Sam try to save the life of an alcoholic man (Ray Liotta), who might be living his final minutes. As his life hangs in the line, he tries to make ends meet with his son. The entire episode consists of this one plot line with no side stories and takes place in real time.

11x7 White Guy, Dark Hair (AKA It Happens) - Kovac and Sam treat a woman who was brutally beaten and raped. Wanting to help police catch the predator, Sam tries a risky procedure to help the woman speak. Lewis schedules a JCAHO emergency drill without telling the staff. Carter tends to a teenage girl denying her newly born baby.

11x8 A Shot in the Dark - Lewis, Neela and Ray treat a police officer shot during a robbery. His 15-year-old son must make a difficult decision on his fathers course of treatment and he turns to Ray for advice. Ray later fails the son and gets an angry earful from Neela. Abby and Dubenko try to help a young girl whose mother doesn't want her to have critical surgery at County. Carter and Wendall have their first date. Pratt is criticized by Chen over a patient's missed injury but he later finds out her father's condition is deteriorating.

11x9 'Twas the Night - It's Christmas Eve in the ER. Abby receives a dialysis patient who is in critical condition, but she can't reach his physician because he doesn't want to be disturbed during the holidays, so she breaks the rules to save the patient's life. When Chen can't find someone to cover her shift so she can attend to her ailing father, she quits. Pratt later heads to her house and finds she is planning to euthanize her dad.

11x10 Skin - Abby is kidnapped by gang members in the hope that she can save one of their wounded. Ray begins treatment on a woman who soon requests a new doctor because she recognizes he's not comfortable being herself. Weaver helps Lewis cope with her new administrative position.

11x11 Only Connect - Lewis assigns Kovac to teach the residents how to communicate more effectively with their patients. They are put to the test when two teenagers are brought to the ER with gun shot wounds. Lawyer Herb Spivak shows up at the ER and annoys just about everyone. Pratt continues to dazzle with his medical skills but fizzle with his teaching ones. Also, Abby returns to work still dealing with the trauma of her abduction, but a pep talk from med student Jake gets her back in the game.

11x12 The Providers - Carter treats a 16-year-old girl who is suffering after taking a new drug to control her seizures. Carter's old medical student, George Henry, is the girl's doctor. When things get worse, the father makes a desperate act to save his daughter's life. Carter's response to the event could hurt Susan's career aspiration and enrages Kerry.

11x13 Middleman - Kovac and Pratt examine a man who got shot when he confronted his boss with a gun and Kovac and Dubenko get into a disagreement, while Jake tries to convince Abby that being a student shouldn't keep him from dating her. Also, Pratt treats a boy with a suspicious gash and ignores Wendall's questions, with tragic results.

11x14 Just As I Am (AKA Shortness of Breath) - Weaver treats an evasive patient who reveals to her that she's her birth mother. As they spend time together, Weaver reveals to her mother - an evangelical Christian - that she is gay. She also reveals why she uses her crutch and the story behind her childhood.

11x15 Alone in a Crowd - If a lone tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? When a young mother of three suffers a stroke, Kovac and Sam race against the odds to save her life. Knowing that a controversial surgical procedure is his wife's only shot at a full recovery, a husband must make the unenviable decision to risk her life in order to save it. Pratt confronts Morris about his stupid behavior and impresses Susan, but he surprises her by saying he's not interested in being Chief Resident. Carter can't tell Wendall he's over Kem, so she walks away from him.

11x16 Here and There - A young girl in Iraq is wounded in a car bombing and local hospitals are unequipped to help. Gallant enlists the support of Neela to secure the needed treatment at County, but getting the girl to the United States proves to be more difficult than initially thought. Neela nearly sleeps with one of Ray's co-band members before realizing the guy she wants is Gallant.

11x17 Back in the World - Neela is surprised when she hears that Gallant came to the ER with the young Iraqi burn victim, but they later connect on many levels. Sam is troubled by a visit from her ex-husband. Pratt treats a child whose gun went off in his pocket and learns that he received the gun from an unusual source, while finding an attraction to a young woman who runs an anti-violence program.

11x18 Refusal of Care - Lewis, Neela and Sam are unable to treat a woman suffering from the effects of a hunger strike designed to prevent her son from being deported. Meanwhile, Abby is unable to prove that a 72-year-old woman is the victim of elder abuse.

11x19 Ruby Redux (AKA Call Me Ruby) - Healing old wounds is not easy. 85-year-old Jules Rubadoux is brought in and erroneously accuses Carter of killing his wife ten years ago. Although Abby believes Rubadoux is too old to undertake surgery to correct a heart murmur, the attending doctors opt to go ahead with the operation. Also, Morris may end up with the chief resident job. And could Sam be pregnant?

11x20 You Are Here - Morris has been appointed the new chief resident and immediately locks horns with Pratt as they deal with the casualties from a fire at an apartment building. Lewis is taking out her frustration from not being tenured on Carter and Ray, the latter secretly helping a teenager who is being sexually abused. Kovac finds Sam's pregnancy test, but quickly discovers that she's not pregnant, and they jointly lament their lack of communication skills.

11x21 Carter est Amoureux - After hearing that her mother is sick, Carter flies to Paris to see Kem. While there, Carter offers to move back to Africa to start all over. Abby, Ray and Neela all make medical mistakes. While in counseling, Sam reveals that she thinks that she and Kovac shouldn't be together.

11x22 The Show Must Go On - It's Carter's last shift in the ER. Kovac and most of the ER staff take Carter on a surprise good-bye party. Meanwhile, Ray and Morris attend their own party that soon is interrupted by disaster that quickly is taken to County where Abby, Neela and Ray must step up to the challenge all on their own. Also, Sam learns that her son Alex has run away. Nielsen Ratings: 18.8 million viewers
