A boy named Jack steals Zedd, Richard and Kahlan's horses and sells them to Rymus, a magic peddler, in the village of Drendril. While tracking Jack in the village, Richard is aided by a bartender's magic potion that allows him to see Jack's precise location. Jack leads them to Rymus, who tells his associates to attack them. During the fight, Kahlan uses her Confessor power on Rymus and Zedd exposes himself as a wizard. They discover that Drendril is being corrupted by a wizard's magic potions. The wizard captures Zedd and is revealed to be Jeziah, a past student of Zedd. Richard uses more of the bartender's potion to find Zedd but is eventually forced to use his woods guide skills. After finding Zedd, Richard, Kahlan and Rymus engage Jeziah and the peddlers in a fight. Though the peddlers are defeated and Jeziah captured, Rymus dies protecting Kahlan. Zedd reminds Kahlan of her secrets and warns her of the feelings that are developing between her and Richard.
